*9 Months **after** the Coup, **Human Rights** in Honduras** *

On Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Boston City Hall, under the auspices of
Councilor Felix Arroyo

Proyecto Hondureño and Centro Presente held a press conference regarding the
current state of Honduras.

Visiting speakers from Honduras Dr. Juan Almendares and Dr. Luther Castillo
spoke in detail about the human rights violations in Honduras during the
coup and their continuance under the current regime of Porfirio Lobo.

 Also present were: Joshua Rubinstein, Director of North East
AmnestyInternational
and Jeff Crosby President of the local 201 IUE-CWA, AFL-CIO.

Dr. Juan Almendares stated, “No one has been brought to justice for the
murder of Resistance members during the coup.  In addition, one of the key
coup organizers General Velasquez Velasquez has been rewarded by the
government of Porfirio Lobo by an appointment to the role of Minister of
Communications in the Lobo government.”  Dr. Almendares also commented on the
conflict of Lower Aguan in Honduras, where there is imminent danger of a
mass slaughter of peasants advocating land reform. He stated, “ one of the
most powerful oligarchy families who was key to the orchestration of the
coup- The Facuse family, have brought in gunmen from Colombia to
Honduras,in addition to their private army to repress the peasants in
Lower Aguan.
Already there have been murders of one journalist from the nearby city of
Tocoa, Honduras as well as other members of the campesinos organization MUCA
(United Peasant Movement of Aguan).

The representative of Amnesty International, Joshua Rubenstein,
emphasizedthe role this
institution plays in condemning human rights violations. Mr. Crosby
from delLocal 201 de
IUE-CWA-AFLCIO, expressed his sympathy with the struggle of Honduran workers.
Both joined in the condemnation of the human rights violations that
arebeing carried out in
Honduras.

 Dr. Castillo narrated his own experience, as well as that of other
Hondurans regarding the repression by the regime during and after the coup.
The hospital founded by Dr. Castillo was closed several times during the
coup resulting in loss of medical attention to one of the poorest and
neediest communities on the Honduran coast. Currently, it remains
opendespite daily threats.

 The speakers emphasized the role of the State Department and its complicity
with the coup leaders during and after the coup.  They spoke of the
determination of organized resistance to changes Honduras, to a
countrywhere all Hondurans can
be represented. The press conference ended with a call to action and
an invitation
to visit Honduras and demonstrate solidarity: in particular the Lower
Aguanfarmers.



 While in the area, Dr. Luther Castillo also spoke at Brown University in
Rhode Island and both Dr. Almendares and Dr. Castillo  also presented at
Hampshire College in Amherst, MA.

El miércoles 7 de abril se llevo a cabo una conferencia de prensa sobre la
violación de derechos humanos en Honduras en el municipio de Boston organizado
por el Proyecto Hondureño y Centro Presente con bajo el Auspicio del
concejal Félix Arrollo.

 Oradores visitantes de Honduras, Dr. Juan Almendrares y el Dr. Luther
Castillo quienes hablaron detalladamente sobre las violaciones de derechos
humanos, durante el golpe de estado y su continuación bajo el
régimenpresente de Porfirio Lobo.  Presentes
estuvieron también: El Sr. Joshua Rubinstein Director del Norte este
de Amnistía
Internacional y el Sr. Jeff Crosby Presidente del Local 201 de
IUE-CWA-AFLCIO.

 El Dr, Juan Almendares, comento, “nadie ha sido llevado a la justicia por
la muerte de los miembros de la resistencia bojo el golpe.  Además uno de
los planificadote claves del golpe el General Velásquez Velásquez ha sido
premiado por el gobierno de Porfirio Lobo con la posición de Ministro de
Comunicaciones”. También el comento sobre el conflicto del Bajo Aguan en
honduras, donde existe la posibilidad eminente de una masacre de campesinos
que abogan por la reforma agraria.  El comento,”una de las familias de la
oligarquía que fue clave en orquestación del golpe la familia Facuse, ha
traído sicarios de Colombia a Honduras en adición a sus fuerzas privadas
para reprimir a los campesinos del bajo aguan/ Ya han muerto un periodista
de la zona de Tocoa y varios miembros de la organización MUCA, (Movimiento
Unificado Campesino del Aguan)”.

 El representante de amnistía internacional Joshua Rubenstein enfatizo la
labor desempeñada por esa institución en la condena a las violaciones los
derechos humanos. El Sr. Crosby, del la Unión IUE_CWA_AFL-CIO se
solidarizocon la lucha de
los trabajadores hondureño.  Los dos se sumaron a la condena de la violación
de los derechos humanos que se esta llevando a cabo e Honduras.

 El Dr. Castillo narro la experiencia vivida de la represión del
régimendurante el golpe y
después del golpe ya que su hospital que atiende a una de las comunidades en
la costa de Honduras fue cerrado varias veces bajo el golpe.  Hoy en día se
mantienen abiertos bajo amenazas.
 Los oradores enfatizaron el papel del Departamento de  estado y su complicidad
con los golpistas durante y después del golpe. Los Doctores hablaron de la
determinación de la resistencia organizada para hacer cambios en Honduras
para que todos los hondureños tengan representación. La conferencia de
prensa termino con un llamado a la acción y una invitación a visitar a
Honduras y brindar su solidaridad, en particular los campesinos del Bajo
Aguan.

Mientras en el area de Boston, el Dr. Castillo presento en la Universidad de
Brown en Rhode Island, y los Doctores Alemdares y Castillo hablaron en la
Universidad de Hampshire en Amherst, Massachusetts.
