El Presidente salvadoreño acaba de lanzar en
Washington su petición para que cuanto antes se den los pasos para la
reintegración de Honduras en el seno de la OEA, una acción que sigue los pasos
de las declaraciones de la Secretaria de Estado del gobierno de los Estados
Unidos, Hillary Clinton en su reciente reunión sostenida en Guatemala con la
mayoría de presidentes centroamericanos. 

Siempre esperamos del Presidente salvadoreño
una palabra solidaria y de cercanía a los sufrimientos de los sectores
hondureños que se opusieron al golpe de Estado. Sin embargo, parece que Don
Mauricio Funes o está muy mal informado, o su petición responde a un cínico papel
asumido para quedar bien con la campaña del Departamento de Estado y de las
extremas derechas internacionales por apurar el reconocimiento del régimen de
Lobo Sosa, justamente cuando en el interior del país la incertidumbre y la
inestabilidad definen y controlan el rumbo de la sociedad hondureña. 

Honduras necesita del reconocimiento y de la
ayuda internacional. Pero con la misma urgencia, el país necesita que se
resuelva el grave problema de las violaciones a los derechos humanos que vienen
ocurriendo con especial crueldad desde el día que ocurrió el golpe de Estado.
El reintegro de Honduras a la OEA y el reinicio de la ayuda de Estados Unidos,
y en general de los organismos internacionales, debían estar emparejadas con el
esclarecimiento de todos los casos de violación a los derechos humanos y los
crímenes de lesa humanidad cometidos desde el 28 de junio a la fecha, y con el
compromiso del gobierno de poner en marcha un proceso judicial que condene a
los responsables de dichos crímenes y se repare los daños y la dignidad de las
víctimas.  

Es curioso que en el momento que Don Mauricio
Funes eleva su grito para que Honduras sea readmitida en la OEA --guardando
silencio sobre derechos humanos--, el régimen de Lobo Sosa premia a Romeo
Vásquez Velásquez, responsable de ejecutar el golpe de Estado, como gerente de
las telecomunicaciones estatales del país.  

Si Don Mauricio Funes demanda con tanta
vehemencia el reconocimiento del gobierno de Honduras y calla la petición de
mucha gente de Honduras de esclarecer todas las violaciones a los derechos
humanos, ese presidente salvadoreño, en lugar de ser un valuarte que defiende
los procesos democráticos de Centroamérica, pasa a convertirse en cómplice de
las violaciones y de los crímenes de lesa humanidad ocurridos en Honduras. 

La postura que actualmente asume Don Mauricio
Funes lo está convirtiendo amargamente en un promotor de resolver los
conflictos internos de los estados a través de la ley del más fuerte, y si hay
necesidad, mandando al carajo la democracia y el Estado de Derecho, siguiendo
el modelo inaugurado en Honduras con el golpe de Estado, del cual el mismo
Mauricio Funes, por andar de servil del Departamento de Estado del gobierno
gringo, podría ser una siguiente víctima.

The Travails of
Mauricio Funes 

The President of El Salvador has just made his request in Washington
that steps be taken as soon as possible for the reintegration of Honduras into
the OAS, an action that follows in the footsteps of the declarations of the
U.S. government’s Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, during her recent
meeting in Guatemala with the majority of Central American presidents.  

We always expect a word of solidarity and empathy for the suffering of
the Honduran sectors that opposed the coup. 
However, it seems that Mr. Mauricio Funes is either very poorly informed
or his request is part of a cynical role taken on in order to fit in well with
the campaign of the Department of State and the international extreme right
wing that are in a hurry for the recognition of the Lobo Sosa regime, and just
when, inside the country, uncertainty and instability define and control the
course of Honduran society.  

Honduras needs recognition and international aid but, with the same
urgency, the country needs the resolution of the grave problem of the violation
of human rights that has been occurring with particular cruelty since the day
of the coup d’etat. The reintegration of Honduras into the OAS and the
restoration of U.S. aid, and aid from the international organizations in
general, must be paired with the clarification of all the cases of human rights
violations and crimes against humanity committed from June 28 to the present,
and there must be a commitment from the government to put into action a
judicial process that condemns those responsible for these crimes and provides
reparation for the damages and dignity of the victims.  

It is curious that at the same moment in which Mr. Mauricio Funes raises
his cry that Honduras be readmitted to the OAS --while maintaining silence on
human rights --, the regime of Lobo Sosa awards Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, the
person responsible for executing the coup d’etat, the position of head of the
national telecommunications of the country.  

If Mr. Mauricio Funes demands the recognition of the government of
Honduras with such and silences the request of many people in Honduras to
clarify all the human rights violations, this Salvadoran president, rather that
being a bulwark for the defense of the democratic processes of Central America,
is converted into an accomplice to the violations and crimes against humanity
that occur in Honduras.  

The posture currently taken by Mr. Funes is transforming him, sadly,
into a promoter of the resolution of internal conflicts in countries through
the application of “might makes right”, and if necessary, the sending of
democracy and the rule of law to hell. 
This is the model inaugurated in Honduras with the coup d’etat, and due
to this servility to the gringo government’s Department of State, Mauricio
Funes may find himself one of the next victims.
