Sergio Reyes ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: SOA Watch To: sreyes1 at yahoo.com Sent: Thursday, March 3, 2016 8:31 AM Subject: Indigenous Activist Berta C?ceres Assassinated in Honduras Indigenous Activist Berta C?ceres Assassinated in Honduras Human Rights Organizations Demand an Investigation of the Circumstances Surrounding the Assassination of Berta C?ceres, the General Coordinator of COPINHHONDURAS - At approximately 11:45pm last night, the General Coordinator of COPINH, Berta Caceres was assassinated in her hometown of La Esperanza, Intibuca. At least two individuals broke down the door of the house where Berta was staying for the evening in the Residencial La L?bano, shot and killed her. COPINH is urgently responding to this tragic situation.Berta C?ceres is one of the leading indigenous activists in Honduras. She spent her life fighting in defense of indigenous rights, particularly to land and natural resources.C?ceres, a Lenca woman, grew up during the violence that swept through Central America in the 1980s. Her mother, a midwife and social activist, took in and cared for refugees from El Salvador, teaching her young children the value of standing up for disenfranchised people.C?ceres grew up to become a student activist and in 1993, she cofounded the National Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) to address the growing threats posed to Lenca communities by illegal logging, fight for their territorial rights and improve their livelihoods.Berta C?ceres and COPINH have been accompanying various land struggles throughout western Honduras. In the last few weeks, violence and repression towards Berta C?ceres, COPINH, and the communities they support, had escalated. In Rio Blanco on February 20, 2016, Berta C?ceres, COPINH, and the community of Rio Blanco faced threats and repression as they carried out a peaceful action to protect the River Gualcarque against the construction of a hydroelectric dam by the internationally-financed Honduran company DESA. As a result of COPINH's work supporting the Rio Blanco struggle, Berta C?ceres had received countless threats against her life and was granted precautionary measures by the InterAmerican Commission for Human Rights. On February 25, 2016, another Lenca community supported by COPINH in Guise, Intibuca was violently evicted and destroyed.Since the 2009 military coup, that was carried out by graduates of the U.S. Army School of the Americas, Honduras has witnessed an explosive growth in environmentally destructive megaprojects that would displace indigenous communities. Almost 30 percent of the country's land was earmarked for mining concessions, creating a demand for cheap energy to power future mining operations. To meet this need, the government approved hundreds of dam projects around the country, privatizing rivers, land, and uprooting communities. Repression of social movements and targeted assassinations are rampant. Honduras has the world's highest murder rate. Honduran human rights organizations report there have been over 10,000 human rights violations by state security forces and impunity is the norm - most murders go unpunished. The Associated Press has repeatedly exposed ties between the Honduran police and death squads, while U.S. military training and aid for the Honduran security forces continues.###Download and print the poster: http://soaw.org/docs/missed-BertaCaceres.pdf Berta C?ceres, PRESENTE -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This situation is the direct cause for the massive waves of Honduran migrants entering this country without documentation. And while many are fleeing the crime and impunity there are those who remain and fight against it, such as Berta C?ceres, who sadly become martyrs for their causes. On Monday, 7 March at 6:00 pm Eastern time we will have a teleconference with Gerardo Torres, a Honduran journalist and activist who will provide an overview of the current state of human rights abuses and the social movements against them in Honduras. Here is the call-in info:??Number to dial: 312-971-2748 / PIN: 42868 Honduras has consistently had one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world since the coup d'?tat they experienced in 2009. Every 17 hours a woman is murdered in Honduras and the high rates of impunity ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are never punished. In terms of the violence of poverty, 80% of the population lives in poverty. Berta C?ceres was a leader in the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH), an indigenous rights and environmental organization which has been engaged in a battle against hydroelectric dam projects in the lands of the Lenca people in Central Honduras. A winner of the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize, her international notoriety did not protect her from the rampant, political violence targeting human rights activists in Honduras. We reject thedecision of the Attorney General of Honduras who yesterday March 7 extended for30 days a migratory warning that prevents the Mexican activist Gustavo CastroSoto to return home. This decision is unwarranted and unnecessary: ??GustavoCastro, who was wounded during the assassination of Berta Caceres on March 3 inLa Esperanza, Intibuca, Honduras, has provided sufficient information to theprosecution to clarify the facts of the crime. In addition, it has not beeninformed of what legal proceeding are still missing to hold him.On March 6, the Attorney General of Honduras verballyassured Gustavo Castro inside the Embassy of Mexico in Tegucigalpa that afterproviding his statement on March 7 in La Esperanza, he could leave the country. As he is being forcefully held in Honduras, Gustavo Castrois not being treated as a victim of an assassination attempt, but rather theyare risking his life and violating his right to free movement.?We clarify that theenvironmental coordinator of the organization ?Other Worlds A.C./ Friends ofthe Earth Mexico,? never refused to cooperate with the prosecution to clarifythe murder of the Lenca leader Berta Caceres, who was the coordinator of theCouncil of Popular and Indigenous Organizations (COPINH). Like COPINH, we demand that the investigaton of this crimebe directed towards the company Desarrollos Energeticos S.A. (DESA), developerof the dam Agua Zarca, against which COPINH has spent years fighting withdignity. At the same time it is necessary to position the fight of COPINH andBerta for the defense of land and territory against various companies andcorporations as the motive for the abominable murder of the environmentaladvocate. We thank theAmbassador of Mexico in Honduras, Dolores Jimenez, who since March 3 has putall his energy and influence to ensure the physical and psychological integrityof Gustavo Castro and requested that he be allowed to leave the country. It isvery important that the Ambassador maintains the same diplomatic effort tocontinue defending the human rights of the Mexican environmentalist. We demand that the Government of Mexico exercise greaterforce and strength to ensure that the Government of Honduras guarantees the immediatedeparture of Gustavo Castro from Honduras. We ask all to contact President of the Republic of Honduras- Phone: (504) 2290-5000 to expedite the protected exit of Castro fromHonduras.
