On Tuesday, in Chicago, we will be having bullhorning and leafleting
at the Federal Plaza. Our call pointed out--

On Wednesday the illegal U.S.-backed military coup will be seated, the U.S.
military occupation of Haiti is escalating, and the role of U.S. bases for
Colombia and attacks on Venezuela and Cuba are not well known.

Honduras-- Following the U.S.-backed military coup on June 28 that removed
the democratically elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, from
office, the U.S. government supported an illegal election on November
29th. The national resistance organizations of the Honduran people called
for a boycott-- and the turnout was less than 50%. The Obama
Administration, practically alone in the world, has recognized the results of
the illegal election and the installation of the coup government on January
27th. The U.S. government has taken no stand against the continued killings of
people who are opposing the coup government. We should stand with the
heroic Honduran people in resisting the coup, and condemn the U.S. government
for backing it.

Colombia-- As part of U.S.
interference in Latin America, the Obama Administration recently announced its
plan to establish seven military bases and 34 military “lily pads” in
Colombia. These can be used by the U.S. as jumping off points to try to
seize control of all of Latin America and its rich natural resources and labor
power. The U.S. wants to overthrow the political opposition to U.S.
domination in Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, etc.* U.S. control of Latin America has
been the U.S. aim since the days of the Monroe Doctrine, the Spanish American
War, the Bay of Pigs invasion, the U.S. organized 1973 coup in Chile, and the
failed 2002 U.S.-backed coup in Venezuela.
* See Eva

Haiti— The U.S. government, hiding behind a banner of aid, has
maneuvered to get thousands of troops in control of the airport and
roads--all the while getting in the way of deliveries of food and
medicine. While people from all over the world concentrated on
saving Haitian lives, the U.S. government was plotting how to further tighten
its grip on Haiti. The U.S. has been a key factor in making Haiti
poor, and trying to dominate it militarily and politically since the
Haitians’ 1804 successful slave revolution. The U.S. used invasions and
occupations. The U.S. sold U.S. rice and other products below the price of
Haitian products to ruin Haitian agriculture, and force Haitians to
become cheap labor in foreign owned factories. The U.S. imposed a
huge debt burden, and organized military coups to remove the democratically
elected President Aristide and suppress the people’s movement for democracy and
freedom.*(See the interview with journalist Kim Ives on “How Western
Domination Has Undermined Haiti’s Ability to Recover from Natural Devastation,”
Democracy Now, 1/20/10, www.democracynow.org/2010/1/20/journalist_kim_ives_on_how_decades)
This
has to stop, and the U.S. government must pay reparations to the Haitian people.
